Creating cabinets

The Cabinet 3D

tool is part of the interiorcad tool set. The tool has two modes, a library menu and a settings option. The first mode is always disabled. The second mode allows you to change the insertion point of the cabinet. The menu opens the user library of cabinets and the settings option allows you to define the default for new cabinets inserted into the current document

The outline of the cabinet is displayed at the cursor. With the first click you set the insertion point. Then you can rotate the cabinet. The second click completes the insertion.

Properties in the Object Info palette

The Object Info palette can be used to change the name, position, and dimensions of the cabinet.

(1) A positive angle rotates the Cabinet counterclockwise, a negative value rotates the Cabinet clockwise.

(2) The „Dimensions“ selection button can be used to switch between „Overall“ and „Corpus“. Depending on the selection, a number of input options are available to adjust the dimensions.

(3) The 3D Details checkbox also makes CNC machinings visible in isometric views. By fading-in the insertion points, changing the properties using the Object Info Palette makes it possible to observe in which "direction" the adjustment of the dimension has an effect.

(4) Click the Cutting List or NC Export button to start exporting the selected cabinets. Clicking the Edit button opens the Cabinet 3D. At the bottom of the Object Info Palette, each individual area of the Cabinet 3D can be opened directly.

Object Details

The Cabinet Records provide you with detailed object information about your cabinet. This can be displayed in the Object Info section on the "Data" tab. Select "interiorcad > Custom Parts > Object Details…" from the menu bar. In the "Cabinet Records" section, place a check mark in the "Object info" option field.

Creating cabinets from a polygon

Using the 2D drawing tools in the Vectorworks Basic palette, you can draw any polygon to be used as a basic shape for a cabinet. For example, you might start with a rectangle and then use the Chamfer tool to further refine its shape. Then, select the Cabinet 3D tool in the Interiorcad tool set, and use the «Create» button on the tool bar to automatically create a cabinet from this polygon in Top/Plan view. interiorcad will automatically detect the back side of the carcass, if it is parallel to the horizontal or vertical axes on the drawing area.

Creating a similar cabinet

You can also create Cabinets by right-clicking on an existing Cabinet object and choosing «Create Similar Object» from the object‘s context menu.

Converting a shelf to cabinet

Shelves, created in the german Vectorworks Architect version, can be converted to «Cabinets» and vice-versa, using the «Convert to Shelf» button or «Convert to Cabinet» on the Object Info Palette. The newly created Cabinets retain properties such as the insertion point, width, height, depth, and sectioning details of the original Shelves. The conversion of cabinets to shelves is only available if you are using the german version of Vectorworks Architect or similar.

Unique part names

By creating a cabinet, each carcass part is assigned a document-wide unique part name. When editing the cabinet, the unique names remain the same, if all the carcass parts still exist.
